COURSE ENTERPRISE ARCHITECTURE

This written course was developed for the IMF with Sogeti acting in an editorial capacity. The authors of many of the subjects are employed by Sogeti in the Enterprise Architecture department. Two guest authors from BiZZdesign also made a contribution.

As the name indicates, this course concerns Enterprise Architecture. It is intended to provide an insight into the ins and outs of enterprise architecture. What is it? What can you do with it? How do you do it? What is involved? How do implement it? How do you optimize it? What resources are available? This all augmented with practical examples.

The course consists of eight lessons:

Lesson I: Enterprise Architecture: introduction
This lesson describes what is meant by the term enterprise architecture; what is the importance of EA and what is the vision regarding EA.

Lesson II: Enterprise Development
This lesson describes how strategy development provides the first step in enterprise development. The strategy needs to be consistent and coherent in order to be implemented.
The enterprise is a complex, open sociotechnical system. The development of such a system requires normative guidance in the development process.

Lesson III: Enterprise Architecture
This lesson is dedicated to enterprise architecture itself. The four domains: business; organization; information/data supply and technology are discussed.  Various forms of enterprise architecture are addressed. Illustrations are used to demonstrate what enterprise architecture looks like.

Lesson IV: Developing an Enterprise Architecture
In this lesson the practical aspects of developing enterprise architecture are discussed. The role of the stakeholders and the reference frameworks are addressed. Subsequently the role and objectives of an architecture framework are discussed. The role and objectives of modeling and techniques is discussed and illustrated using examples.

Lesson V: Working with Enterprise Architecture
This lesson focuses on the details of working within an architecture. The relevant processes for working within an architecture are clarified as is how those processes should be configured. Models used to identify strong and weak points within an organization relative to working within an architecture, in addition to being used as benchmarks for comparisons with other organizations, are highlighted. Lastly, professionalizing the architecture function is addressed.

Lesson VI: Enterprise Architecture and Governance
In this lesson the relationship between architecture and governance is examined. Which components are required for a solid IT management are highlighted and justified. The structure of IT governance; enterprise architecture; project portfolio management and business case/investment management are tackled using the latest developments.

Lesson VII: Tools for the Enterprise Architecture
An overview is given on the various tools; the associated requirements and their possible applications in architecture implementations. The bottlenecks of using the various tools are highlighted as are the advantages of using the appropriate tool. The tool selection process is reviewed. Lastly, a tool classification is specified.
