In an organization it is often not clear what an architect does. Defining a products and services catalogue, as the fourth element in the architectural vision statement, allows the architect to ensure that the expectations are managed for what they are able to provide.
The customer is usually the departure point when defining a products and services catalogue. Which of the customer’s problems can be solved by which service? Viewing the products and services from the customer’s perspective has the added benefit of clarifying what the value of architecture is for the customer.
